Banks Never Ask That.

Beware of imposters, learn how.
Sep 29, 2025, 11:24 AM by Joel Prunty

Can you spot a scam?

Every day, thousands of people fall victim to fraudulent emails, texts and calls from scammers pretending to be their bank, a loved one, the government or law enforcement. And in this time of expanded use of online and mobile banking, the problem is only growing. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission’s report on fraud estimates that American consumers lost a staggering $12.5 billion to phishing scams and other fraud in 2024 — an increase of 25% over 2023.

These criminals are skilled at tricking you— convincing you to trust them, pay them and act fast. It’s time to snap out of it.

The phrase "Banks Never Ask That" is part of a campaign aimed at educating consumers about phishing scams. Here are key points to remember:

Phishing Awareness: Banks will never ask you for sensitive information like passwords or PINs via email or text.

Common Tactics: Scammers often use scare tactics, such as urgent warnings about account issues, to trick you into providing personal information.

Campaign Purpose: The #BanksNeverAskThat campaign, created by the American Bankers Association, aims to inform consumers about these threats and how to recognize them.

Always be cautious and verify any requests for personal information directly with your bank.
